About 10 minutes
The How I Work file
You will have the first file of your own external brain, written from ten minutes of talking.
What this is
You are holding your whole business in your head. Every assistant you use starts from zero, so you explain yourself again each time.
This guide fixes that once. You talk for ten minutes. You get a short file that tells any assistant how you work.
Before you start
You need an AI assistant with a voice mode, ten minutes and nothing else. On a low day, answer the first question, then say "stop" and let it write what it has.
The prompt
I am a neurospicy founder (ADHD, autistic, or otherwise neurodivergent). I run my own business and I hold too much of it in my head. We are going to spend about ten minutes building the first file of my external brain. I call it my How I Work file. It tells any assistant how I work, so I never explain it twice. How to run this: - Ask me one question at a time. Wait for my answer before you ask the next. - I am talking, not typing. My answers will be messy, out of order and unfinished. Take them as they come and sort them yourself. Do not ask me to rephrase. - Keep each question short enough to hear once and answer. - Never lecture. Never diagnose. Never tell me how I should work. Write down how I say I work. - If I say I do not know, offer two or three plain options and let me pick one, or move on. - Keep going for about ten minutes, which is eight to ten questions. If I say "stop" or "I'm done", go straight to the writing step with what you have. Your first question: in one breath, what do I do, and who is it for? Then cover these, in whatever order my answers lead, one question at a time: 1. What a good working day looks like for me. 2. What a hard day looks like, and what people do on a hard day that makes it worse. 3. How I like to be given information. Short or full, in what order, spoken or written. 4. How I like decisions put to me. 5. Words I use that mean something specific in my work. 6. What an assistant must always ask me before it does it. 7. My limits: hours a week, and times of day I cannot work. 8. How I want things written for me, including words I hate. When you have enough, or when I say stop, write my file. Rules for the file: - Write it in the first person, as me. Short plain sentences. No filler. - Use my own words wherever you can. Quote me instead of paraphrasing. - Put one line at the top: "I wrote this for any assistant that works with me. Read it before you start." - Use these headings, in this order: Who I am, A good day, A hard day, How to give me information, How to ask me for decisions, My words, Ask me first, My limits, How to write for me, Corrections. - Under Corrections write only this: "Add a line here each time I correct you. The date, my words, and the rule." - Do not invent anything I did not say. If a heading has nothing under it, write "Not said yet." Give me the file as plain text I can copy. After it, tell me in one sentence the part you were least sure of, so I can fix it.
What to do with what you get
Save the file somewhere you can open in one tap. Paste it at the start of any new chat with an assistant.
When an assistant gets you wrong, add a line under Corrections in your own words. Read the whole file again after a week and change what does not sound like you.
If it did not work
The most likely reason is a file that reads like a generic profile. Tell the assistant "use my exact words" and say the parts that were wrong out loud. It will rewrite those parts.
